Brazil's mobile phone subscriptions increased to 220.3 million in July, up 1.38% from June, according to figures released late Tuesday by telecommunications regulator Anatel.
New subscriptions in July totaled 3 million.
Telecomunicacoes de Sao Paulo SA (VIV), or Vivo, maintained market leadership in July, with a 29.53% share. Vivo is controlled by Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF).
TIM Participacoes SA (TSU), the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA (TI), resumed second position, with a market share of 25.78%.
TIM was the second largest mobile company in Brazil until mid-2008, when it was eclipsed by Claro, the local unit of Mexico's America Movil SA (AMX).
In July, Claro's market share totaled 25.51%, according to Anatel.
In fourth place is the mobile-phone operator Tele Norte Leste Participacoes SA (TNE), or Oi, with a 18.85% share in July.
