ADRs End Mixed; Bank Shares Rise

International stocks trading in New York were mixed on Wednesday.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged up 0.27% to 150.31. The European index increased 0.42% to 147.93, the Asian index eased 0.01% to 158.75, the Latin American index edged down 0.02% to 228.13 and the emerging markets index declined 0.04% to 273.61.

Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN), Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC (RBS, RBS.LN) and UBS AG (UBS) were among the companies with ADRs that traded actively.

Five global banks have agreed to pay more than $5 billion in combined penalties and will plead guilty to criminal charges to resolve a long-running U.S. investigation into whether traders at the banks colluded to move foreign-currency rates to benefit their own positions. Four of the banks, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Barclays, RBS and Citigroup Inc., will plead guilty to conspiring to manipulate the price of U.S. dollars and euros, authorities said. The fifth bank, UBS, received immunity in the antitrust case, but will plead guilty to manipulating the Libor benchmark and also will pay an additional Libor-related fine.

Barclays's ADRs rose 3.4% to $16.86. Royal Bank of Scotland's ADRs increased 1.9% to $11.05. UBS's ADRs rose 3.9% to $21.96.

America Movil SAB (AMX, AMOV, AMX.MX) sold 3 billion euros ($3.33 billion) in bonds convertible into shares of Royal KPN (KPN.AE)--it had planned to sell 2.25 billion euros to 2.5 billion euros--ending doubts about what it might do with its minority stake in the Dutch carrier after a failed 2013 takeover bid. America Movil ADRs rose 1.7% to $20.75.

Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer SA (ERJ, EMBR3.BR) said that it started discussions with the U.S. Justice Department, for a possible resolution of alleged noncompliance with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Embraer ADRs increased 1.2% to $31.75.
