TotalEnergies SE subsidiary Saft said Monday that it has re-designed and improved its lithium-ion battery system for electric and hybrid vessels as it works to help the shipping industry clean up its carbon emissions.

The French battery maker said the new system, called Seanergy 2.0, has a higher energy density of 130 watt-hours per liter, making it compact and lighter. Ship integrators can use individual modules to build large-scale battery systems up to 1,060 volts, it said. The system can be scaled to suit propulsion and other loads on board vessels, including ferries, workboats and tugs, offshore support vessels, cruise liners and yachts, Saft said.

Shipping contributes about 3% of the world's total annual carbon dioxide emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization. Still, viable alternatives to fossil fuels aren't yet available at the required scale to power the world's thousands of vessels and small ships.
