Sempra Energy said first-quarter earnings rose sharply on markedly higher revenue from its natural-gas utilities as rates for customers rose.
The San Diego utility operator logged earnings for the quarter ended in March of $969 million, or $3.07 a share, up from $612 million, or $1.93 a share, a year earlier. Excluding certain one-off items, Sempra posted earnings of $2.92 a share.
First-quarter revenue surged 72%, to $6.56 billion.
Natural-gas utility revenue almost doubled, rising to $4.41 billion from $2.32 billion a year earlier.
Another California utility operator, PG&E, also posted a pronounced increase in natural-gas utility revenue for the first quarter.
Sempra owns utilities in its Southern California base and Oncor Electric Delivery in Texas.
