U.K. advertising regulator Advertising Standards Authority on Wednesday upheld a ban on certain Shell advertisements featuring environmental claims that were deemed misleading to consumers.
ASA said the ads--a poster, a TV ad and a YouTube ad--gave the overall impression that a significant portion of Shell's business comprised lower-carbon energy products, and that further information about the company's larger polluting operations should have been included.
The energy major strongly disagrees with the ASA's decision, and a spokesperson for Shell said that people are already well aware that it produces oil and gas.
The ads were intended to raise awareness of the company's investment in low- and zero-carbon energy, the spokesperson said.
