SYDNEY--Jan du Plessis is expected to step down as chairman of Rio Tinto PLC (RIO.LN) within a year, according to a report in the Financial Times, which says he is set to become the new chairman of British telecoms company BT Group PLC (BT).
The report said Mr. du Plessis is expected to be named to the role on Thursday and that Rio Tinto will immediately begin a search for a new chairman, citing sources close to the two companies.
Rio Tinto declined to comment on the report.
