LONDON--Support for Scotland to stay in the United Kingdom narrowly overshadowed that for independence on Saturday, according to two latest polls.

The surveys come ahead of Thursday's vote on whether Scotland should end its 307-year union with England.

One survey, conducted by pollster Opinium, showed support for staying in the union at 47% and for independence at 43%. Of the 1,055 people surveyed, 10% were undecided or said they would not vote. This poll was conducted between Sept. 9 and Sept. 11.

A survey released earlier in the day, by pollsters Survation for the pro-union campaign, also put support for staying in the U.K. at 47%, though that for independence was at 41%. The remainder of respondents were either undecided or declined to reveal their voting intention, Survation said.

Recent polls have shown rising support among Scots for independence, but most still put the pro-union camp in the lead. Up until a month ago, support for staying in Britain had been strongly in the lead.
