Diesel fuel spilled into the Mississippi River in Illinois Friday morning when a pipeline operated by Phillips 66 leaked, the company said.
Workers discovered the fuel leaking from a pipeline early Friday, the company said. The spill was estimated to be 30,000 gallons by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The pipeline runs from a storage terminal in Hartford, Ill. that is owned by Phillips 66 to a barge dock on the Mississippi River. The diesel spilled into the Cahokia Canal, which empties into the river.
A spokesman for Phillips 66 said the source of the leak has been isolated and containment boom is being used to keep more fuel from reaching the river. Helicopters are also monitoring the waterway, where there is a "light sheen."
