In Asia, Singapore logged a gain of 1.66 percent, and in Europe, the Scandinavian markets are looking particularly strong. The November futures contract on sweet crude oil inched 0.92 percent higher on Friday, but dropped 6.9 percent overall for the week. Meanwhile, November Unleaded Gas futures dropped 12.8 percent last week. Motorists however, continue to wait for this drop to show up in prices at the pump. The Institute for Supply Management's gauge of activity in September showed the index slumping from 65 points in August to 53.3 points -- the lowest since April 2003 and well below estimates that called for a reading of 61 points. Employment, new orders and export orders all showed a drop during the month -- an unsurprising result of the external shocks that hit the economy. On a broader scale, this news does seem to hint that economic growth for the rest of 2005 is likely to drag a little -- especially considering that the service sector accounts for about 80% of GDP growth. On the bright side, however, the US manufacturing sector rose to a 13-month high in September. With that in mind, now could be an opportune time to think about an investment in gold. It's been almost two decades since gold prices broke the US$500 mark. But with prices hitting a 17-year high of US$475 per ounce a couple of weeks ago -- a 17% jump over a year earlier -- some economists are now speculating that it will only be a matter of months before that level is attained again. Are they correct? The common consensus appears to lean that way. But with prices currently hovering around the US$466 level, the short-term correction that many others called for is also now in play before the market forges ahead again. In fact, some commentators are calling for a further downward move to around US$460 or even US$450 before spiking back up. One scenario is a distinct possibility: If gold moves towards the US$500 level, the financial media and mainstream news shows will be paying much more attention. And naturally, there's a reasonable chance that the increased exposure will lead the metal higher still. And once the Federal Reserve brings a halt to its interest rate increases, that action could provide a further trigger for gains.
