International stocks trading in New York closed higher Monday.
The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 0.93% to 145.76. The European index increased 0.92% to 143.26, the Asian index improved 0.75% to 153.69, the Latin American index rose 1.55% to 220.09 and the emerging markets index increased 0.83% to 265.00.
The gains occurred as several stock markets in Asia and Europe were closed Monday for a holiday.
Among the companies with shares that were actively traded was Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR, PETR3.BR, PETR4.BR). ADRs of Petrobras rose 0.6% to $6.80 after the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reported that the company's chief executive expects losses related to a corruption probe will be less than 10 billion reais, or $3.2 billion.
BHP Billiton's ADRs increased 2.1% to $46.51 amid signs that prices in the copper market are rising because of a flurry of disruptions to the industrial metal's output.
Orange ADRs rose 1.2% amid reports that Vivendi SA swooped in with an offer for the company's video-streaming site Dailymotion, after Hong Kong-based telecommunication company PCCW Ltd. dropped out of such talks.
