International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Tuesday. The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 0.8% to 146.02. The European index increased 0.9% to 143.84, the Asian index improved 0.3% to 147.11, the Latin American index rose 1.1% to 253.09 and the emerging markets index increased 0.4% to 279.88. Among the companies with shares that actively traded were JA Solar Holdings Co. (JASO) and Nokia Corp. (NOK, NOK1V.HE).

JA Solar said its shift to focusing on solar modules instead of cells paid off in the third quarter as strong demand in China and Japan led to big increases in profit and revenue. The Chinese solar-panel maker's quarterly results topped expectations. Shares rose 8.9% to $8.49.

Nokia said it would return to the consumer market with a branded tablet computer -- its first device since selling its faltering handset business to Microsoft Corp. earlier this year. The tablet will be manufactured in collaboration with an unnamed Chinese hardware partner. Nokia said the device, called the N1, will roll out early next year, first in China, and be priced at the lower end of the tablet market. Shares rose 3.4% to $7.93.

AstraZeneca PLC (AZN, AZN.LN) is betting on new cancer drugs to help drive long-term revenue growth as the British group stakes out an independent future after the rejection of Pfizer Inc.'s $120 billion takeover offer in May. The U.K. pharmaceutical company said on Tuesday that it has made good progress with its late-stage pipeline of new drugs as it reaffirmed its plan to grow revenues by three-quarters to more than $45 billion by 2023. Shares rose 2% to $73.98.

Prudential PLC (PUK, PRU.LN, K6S.SG, 2378.HK) said its nine-month profit rose as a strong performance in Asia and Britain offset negative currency movements. The U.K. insurer's Asia business received a boost from its expanded distribution partnership with Standard Chartered PLC. Shares rose 41 cents to $46.62.
