ArcelorMittal's Long Products Canada Unit Strikes Deal with 800 Union Employees

LONDON--Steel titan ArcelorMittal (MT) said Tuesday that its Long Products Canada Unit has struck a tentative deal with the United Steelworkers labor union for the renewal of contracts regarding 800 union employees.

The agreement covers union-member operations, maintenance and office employees at the Contrecoeur East steelworks and operations and maintenance employees at the Longueuil bar mill.

The proposal will be presented to union members for ratification during special general meetings to be held in the coming days, the unit of the world's largest steelmaker said. As a result, the unit won't issue any additional comments about the agreement in order to respect the ratification process, it added.

ArcelorMittal's Long Products Canada division employs about 1,700 people in Contrecoeur, Longueuil, Montreal and Hamilton. It operates a scrap-metal recycling and conversion center, an iron-ore reduction plant, two steel mills, three rolling mills and two wire-drawing mills. The division is able to produce 2 million tons of steel annually.
