Kinder Morgan Beats Methane-Emissions Goal

Kinder Morgan Inc. (KMI) said Thursday that it beat its goal of achieving an intensity target of 0.31% of methane emissions per unit of throughput for its natural gas transmission and storage assets.

The goal, which was set for 2025, was surpassed for the second year in a row in 2018, with a methane emission intensity rate for these operations of 0.02%. The energy infrastructure company said it had a methane emission intensity rate of 0.04% in 2017.

Kinder Morgan released the data as part of its 2018 Environmental, Social and Governance report on Thursday. The report included the company's first 2degC resiliency assessment. The scenario, as laid out by the International Energy Agency, aims to limit the average global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius by 2100.

Under the 2degC scenario, Kinder Morgan expects to benefit from higher demand for natural gas to supplement variable power supply from renewable generation.
