Kellogg Co. (K) on Monday said its Honey Smacks cereal will begin returning to U.S. shelves next month in limited quantities following a nationwide recall over salmonella concerns.
The Battle Creek, Mich., cereal maker in June recalled more than 11 million boxes of Honey Smacks after an outbreak of illness this summer in people who ate cereal made at an Illinois factory owned by Wisconsin-based Kerry Inc.
The Food and Drug Administration in July said cereal at Kerry's Gridley, Ill., plant was made in unsanitary conditions, and that the plant had failed to comply with rules intended to prevent foodborne illness. The plant made Honey Smacks cereal, which in June was tied to a salmonella outbreak that sickened 135 people in 36 states.
Kellogg said it moved Honey Smacks production for the relaunch to its own facility and said it is releasing the cereal with a simpler, updated recipe. The company said boxes of the cereal will be labeled with "New Recipe" in the top left corner.
