International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Tuesday. The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 0.3% to 150.00. The European index decreased 0.33% to 148.38, the Asian index dropped 0.21% to 146.29, the Latin American index fell 0.33% to 277.54 and the emerging markets index declined 0.34% to 288.14. Among the companies with shares that actively traded was America Movil SAB (AMX, AMX.MX) and HSBC Holdings PLC (HSBC, 0005.HK, HSBA.LN).

America Movil gained the first lot of Brazil's auction of 4G connectivity for its Claro unit, which outbid rivals TIM Participacoes (TSU TIMP3.BR) -- the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA (TI, TIT.MI) -- and Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF, TEF.MC), known as Telefonica Brasil. America Movil shares rose 1.8% to $25.20. TIM Participacoes shares fell 2.5% to $26.20 and Telecom Italia declined 1% to $11.44.

Pro-democracy rallies expanded to new parts of Hong Kong in the wee hours of China's National Day, a holiday that looked set to bring crowds and tensions to a peak and increase the chances for a confrontation. Earlier on Tuesday, protest organizers called on Leung Chun-ying, the city's chief executive, to resign and said protests would spread if he didn't respond to their demands by midnight. That deadline passed with no sign of a response from Mr. Leung.

Shares of HSBC, which was among several banks whose operations have been affected by the protests, declined 1.3% to $50.88. Among other decliners, Cnooc Ltd. (CEO, 0883.HK) fell nearly 1% to $172.54; China Mobile Ltd. (CHL, 0941.HK, K3PD.SG) declined 1% to $58.75; China Mobile Games & Entertainment Group Ltd. (CMGE) fell 5.1% to $21.05; China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (CHU, 0762.HK) decreased 1.1% to $15.03, and Hong Kong Television Network Ltd. (HKTV, 1137.HK) dropped 3.5% to $5.85.

Brazilian shares fell Tuesday before the expected release after the close of trading of two polls on voter intentions in the country's October presidential elections. Recent surveys have shown President Dilma Rousseff widening her lead over her main challenger, Marina Silva. Among the decliners, Banco Bradesco SA (BBDO, BBDC4.BR) fell 2.3% to $14.32; Centrais Elétricas Brasileiras SA (EBR, ELET6.BR) or Eletrobras, decreased 4.6% to $2.70; Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR, PETR3.BR, PETR4.BR) dropped 3.5% to $14.19.

Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS, RBS.LN) said Tuesday that full-year write-downs would be lower than expected as economic conditions and asset prices continue to improve in its key markets. Shares rose 1.7% to $11.93.
