General Motors Co. has struck a supplier agreement with Wolfspeed Inc., marking the company's initial shift to using silicon carbide for electric-vehicle power electronics.
Wolfspeed, formerly Cree Inc., would supply silicon carbide power device products for GM's future electric-vehicle programs, the companies said Monday.
GM said the devices would enable it to install more efficient electric-vehicle propulsion systems. It sees the agreement as providing long-term, domestically sourced supply.
GM would use the silicon carbide in the integrated power electronics contained within its Ultium Drive units in its next-generation electric vehicles, the companies said.
Wolfspeed said the silicon carbide power device products would be made at its Mohawk Valley Fab in Marcy, N.Y. The facility would launch in early 2022.
