General Motors Co. is rolling out a business line dedicated to delivery and logistics using electric vehicles.
The Detroit-based automotive giant Tuesday said the business, called BrightDrop, will sell an "ecosystem of electric first-to-last-mile products, software and services."
Products under the new business line will include a light commercial vehicle with a 250-mile range and 600 cubic feet of cargo area, and a propulsion-assisted electric pallet for moving goods over short distances with a payload of 200 pounds.
The electric pallet has been piloted with FedEx Corp. employees, GM said, adding that in the trial it allowed couriers to handle 25% more packages a day. GM said FedEx will also be the first customer for the planned electric vehicle, receiving its first of the EV600 vehicles later this year.
The vehicles will be powered by GM's Ultium battery system and will be more broadly available starting early next year, GM said.
