SHANGHAI—General Motors Co. and its Chinese partner will recall 2.16 million cars in China because of faulty crankcase valves, the country's quality regulator said Thursday.
The recall follows an investigation launched by the regulator after complaints about broken engines in some GM cars, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.
The affected cars include about 834,000 Buick Excelle sedans, 1.15 million Chevrolet Cruzes, 159,000 Chevy Epicas and 18,000 Chevy Aveos, according to the statement.
The regulator said the crankcase valves of these cars weren't adequately resistant to corrosion, which could damage the engines in the long run.
The recall will begin from Aug. 15, the statement said, and manufacturer SAIC General Motors Co. will change the affected valves for free.
A spokeswoman from GM in China confirmed the statement.
