Equinor ASA and SSE PLC said Thursday that they plan to jointly develop two low-carbon power stations in eastern England's Humber region, comprising a power station with carbon capture and storage technology and a 100% hydrogen-fuelled power station.

The agreement between Equinor and SSE's flexible generation and energy storage unit, SSE Thermal, will see the companies develop the Keadby 3 and Keadby Hydrogen power stations to replace older, carbon-intensive generation.

Keadby 3 would be a 900-megawatt power station fuelled by natural gas and fitted with carbon capture technology to remove the carbon dioxide from its emissions. The captured CO2 would then be transported using shared pipelines before being stored under the southern North Sea.

The development consent application for Keadby 3 could be submitted in spring 2021 and potentially come online by 2027.

Keadby Hydrogen power station would have a peak demand of 1,800 megawatts of hydrogen, producing zero emissions at the point of combustion, and could come online before the end of the decade, the companies said.

Both projects are in the development stage and final investment decisions will depend on the progress of policy frameworks, they said.

SSE Thermal and Equinor are also developing options for hydrogen blending at SSE Thermal's Keadby 2 project and they said they also intend to collaborate on projects elsewhere in the U.K.
