The San Onofre Community Engagement Panel meets June 22 in San Juan Capistrano to discuss storage of the San Onofre nuclear plant’s used fuel. Guest speakers on topics ranging from transportation of used nuclear fuel to a consent-based siting process for interim fuel storage include:

  • Allison M. Macfarlane, former Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman who served on the President’s Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future. Macfarlane is a professor at George Washington University and director of the Center for International Science and Technology Policy at the university’s Elliott School of International Affairs.
  • John Kotek, the U.S. Department of Energy assistant secretary for the Office of Nuclear Energy who has led a series of public meetings throughout the country in recent months on the energy department’s approach to consent-based siting of consolidated interim storage facilities for used nuclear fuel.
  • Jack Edlow, president of Edlow International, a company with decades of international experience transporting used nuclear fuel that today operates in 50 countries.

“We recognize there is strong community interest in storage of San Onofre’s used nuclear fuel and believe the upcoming CEP meeting will provide a robust forum for our neighbors to learn more and ask questions about this important topic,” said Tom Palmisano, Southern California Edison’s chief nuclear officer and vice president of Decommissioning. During the meeting, he will provide an update on preparations to decommission San Onofre.

The regular quarterly meeting will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center, 25925 Camino del Avion. Staffed information booths will be open from 4:30-5:30 p.m. There will be a public comment period and the meeting will be live-streamed via songscommunity.com.

SCE announced in June 2013 that it would retire San Onofre Units 2 and 3, and had begun the process to decommission the facility. SCE has established core principles of safety, stewardship and engagement to guide decommissioning. For more information about SCE, visit songscommunity.com.
