Carnival Corp. (CCL) said it has ordered nine more cruise ships, as part of its fleet replacement program.
The cruise ship company, which operates such lines as Carnival Cruise and Holland America, agreed with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri SpA to build five ships, while German shipbuilder Meyer Werft is to build four vessels, between 2019 and 2022.
Carnival didn't specify which of its lines will receive the new ships.
As part of the fleet replacement program, Carnival plans to add two previously ordered ships in 2015 and remove four. Nine other ships are scheduled to be delivered by 2018, the company said.
In January, The Wall Street Journal reported the company was discussing two joint ventures in China with state-owned China Merchants Group to build cruising ports and ships as it seeks to expand its reach in that country's booming tourism industry.
