Media invited to CP Canada 150 Train event in Hamilton

HAMILTON, ON, Aug. 2, 2017 /CNW/ - Canadian Pacific invites local media to attend the CP Canada 150 Train community event.

Facts about CP in Hamilton

• In an effort to gain access to the lucrative southern Ontario markets and a US gateway through Buffalo, Canadian Pacific Railway bought a 27 percent interest in the Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo (TH&B) in 1895. CPR acquired the remaining TH&B shares in 1977 from the Consolidated Rail Corporation.
• Hamilton-born Raymond Lewis, the first Canadian-born black athlete to hit the podium at the Olympic Games, first worked as a porter for CPR back in the 1920s and 30s. He won a bronze medal with the men's 4×400-metre relay team at the 1932 Olympics and a silver medal at the 1934 British Empire Games.
• Today, CP employs approximately 30 people in Hamilton.
• Hamilton is the largest active port on Lake Ontario serviced by rail.
• Hamilton is in a valley on the Niagara escarpment, with major grades to the north and south. The grade to the north is the second steepest mountain grade on CP's network (including the Rockies) and is six miles long from Waterdown to Hamilton.
