  • The Calgary and Edmonton Railway (later purchased by CPR) first came to Strathcona in 1891 when this community wasn't yet part of Edmonton (Strathcona and Edmonton amalgamated in 1912).
  • Strathcona was named after Donald A. Smith (Lord Strathcona) who drove the last spike at Craigellachie, BC.
  • On June 19th, 1913, the High Level Bridge opens and extends Canadian Pacific service from South Edmonton (Strathcona) to Edmonton.
  • The first railway came to Edmonton proper in 1904, many years after it was established as a trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company and one year before officially becoming a city.
  • In 1900, CPR senior director, Donald Smith, later Lord Strathcona, personally equipped and funded a mounted cavalry to send off to South Africa to fight in the Boer war. The regiment, now based in Edmonton, would become known as Lord Strathcona's Horse.
