AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Nov. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- BorgWarner Morse TEC's variable cam timing (VCT) with mid position lock technology has been named a finalist for a prestigious 2011 Automotive News PACE Award, recognized around the world as the industry symbol of innovation. Designed to expand the limitations of conventional VCT systems, BorgWarner's patented mid position lock technology allows an increased range of camshaft positioning, providing OEMs with wider calibration opportunities. Compared with conventional VCT systems, engine testing has demonstrated a 6 to 10 percent improvement in fuel economy while meeting super ultra low emissions vehicle (SULEV) and Euro 5 emissions standards, and maintaining or increasing engine power. BorgWarner is currently working with five OEMs to implement the technology and expects demand to grow quickly.

"BorgWarner's latest VCT innovation provides a major technology and performance breakthrough over our successful Cam Torque Actuated (CTA) system, which won PACE Awards in two categories. With mid position lock technology, engine designers can use advanced strategies to optimize air flow for greater fuel economy and lower emissions, without sacrificing engine torque or power output," said Roger Wood, Executive Vice President, BorgWarner. "At BorgWarner, our innovations provide easy-to-implement solutions that achieve significant results. We're pleased to be among this year's distinguished PACE finalists once again."

Controlling air flow into and out of an engine is the key to optimizing fuel economy, emissions reduction and power density. For reliable engine starting, conventional systems default to one end of the camshaft phaser's range of angular travel. This default stop restricts the amount of travel that can be designed into a variably timed system, placing limits on calibration strategies.  BorgWarner's mid position lock technology allows for a greater range of travel by enabling a default stop at an intermediate position within the expanded range of travel. This gives engine designers and calibrators greater control over airflow and the opportunity to use the Atkinson or Miller cycle for improved fuel economy, function and efficiency. No active control is required to move the VCT system to the mid position and engage the lock. A patented hydraulic circuit passively moves the system to the mid position for reliable repositioning in any potential engine operating condition.

Presented by Automotive News with Ernst & Young and the Transportation Research Center Inc., the PACE Awards honor superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance among automotive suppliers. PACE stands for Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contribution to Excellence. BorgWarner's VCT with mid position lock technology was named a finalist in the Product category, which recognizes innovations in new products, services, or their development that have significant market impact and act as "game changers" in the automotive industry. Winners are selected by an independent panel of judges and will be announced in Detroit on April 11, 2011. Since 2005, BorgWarner has received five PACE Awards, three PACE Innovation Partnership Awards and one PACE Environmental Award.
