Industry-first Cam Torque Actuated (CTA) Variable Cam Timing Phaser and Pressure Sensor Glow Plug for Diesel Engines Earn BorgWarner Its Fourth and Fifth PACE Awards in Five Years, BorgWarner and Ford Presented with PACE Innovation Partnership Award AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BorgWarner was pleased to receive several 2009 Automotive News PACE Awards at a ceremony yesterday in Detroit including: 2009 PACE Award Winners -- Cam Torque Actuated (CTA(TM)) Variable Cam Timing Phaser from Morse TEC -- Pressure Sensor Glow Plug for diesel engines from BERU Automotive News PACE Innovation Partnership Award -- Collaboration on 2009 Ford 3.0-liter Duratec V6 engine with BorgWarner CTA(TM) technology 2009 PACE Award Honorable Mention -- DualTronic Performance Package from Transmission Systems Recognized around the world, the annual Automotive News PACE awards acknowledge automotive suppliers for superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance. PACE stands for Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contribution to Excellence. In addition to this year's awards, BorgWarner received PACE Awards in 2005, 2007 and 2008. "At BorgWarner, our passion for innovation drives break-through technologies to increase fuel economy, lower emissions and improve vehicle performance. This prestigious recognition from PACE acknowledges our employees' hard work and dedication in building BorgWarner's long-standing track record as a powertrain powerhouse," said Tim Manganello, BorgWarner Chairman and CEO. "We are also proud to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Ford, creating a high-performing system that offers dramatic improvements in fuel economy and engine performance." BorgWarner's CTA Variable Cam Timing Phaser from Morse TEC improves engine performance and fuel economy while reducing emissions, engine complexity and engine oil requirements. Traditional cam phasing methods use engine oil pressure to rotate the camshaft, creating the need for a larger engine oil pump and resulting in parasitic energy losses. Instead of using oil pressure, BorgWarner's CTA cam phaser captures the existing torsional energy in the valve train to operate like a hydraulic ratchet. CTA cam phasers operate more quickly and under a wider range of engine speeds and temperatures than other phasing systems, even during engine cranking. This results in improved fuel economy, increased horsepower and reduced emissions. BorgWarner's CTA technology was launched on the upgraded Ford Duratec 3.0-liter V-6 engine, which debuted in the 2009 Ford Escape. In addition, BorgWarner is currently developing the product for five customers worldwide. BorgWarner's Pressure Sensor Glow Plug for diesel engines from BERU was designed to dramatically improve the raw emissions of diesel engines. The innovation combines the sturdy heating rod of the BERU Diesel Instant Start System (ISS) with a piezo-resistive sensor to record the rapidly changing cyclical pressure in the combustion chamber and report the data to the engine control unit. Precisely regulating the combustion process allows engine developers to compensate for inaccuracies in fuel measurement, component tolerances or different operating conditions over the life of the engine. The result is higher engine performance, greater efficiency and lower emissions. In the future, the technology can revolutionize engine combustion control by enabling Homogenous Charge Combustion Ignition (HCCI) and other cutting-edge combustion concepts while offering designers a means to extend the possibilities of meeting emission and fuel economy standards with existing internal combustion engine technologies. Introduced on the 2009 VW Jetta powered by a 2.0-liter CR-TDI engine, the BorgWarner Pressure Sensor Glow Plug is the first technology that allows OEMs to implement closed-loop combustion control in a mass-produced vehicle at a reasonable cost. The 15th annual Automotive News PACE Awards competition was open to suppliers that contribute products, processes, materials or services directly to manufacture cars or trucks. Winners were chosen following an extensive review by industry, academic and business leaders including a comprehensive written application and site visit. BorgWarner's CTA technology won the PACE award in the Product category, which recognizes innovations in the development or introduction of new products or services that have significant market impact and act as "game changers" in the automotive industry. BorgWarner's Pressure Sensor Glow Plug won the PACE award in the Product - Europe category, which recognizes innovations that were developed or first commercialized in Europe, have significant market impact and act as "game changers" in the automotive industry.
