BP PLC (BP, BP.LN) Friday reported a potential release of about 100 pounds of hydrogen sulfide at its oil refinery in Carson, Calif., owing to a possible process unit upset the day before. And, in a separate filing, the company said planned flaring occurred at the plant early on Saturday.
Friday's filing with the South Coast Air Quality Management District, or SCAQMD, said the cause of the H2S release was under investigation. Saturday's filing said the planned flaring event, that began at about 5:50 a.m. PST, caused the release of sulfur dioxide greater than the 500 pounds reporting requirement.
On Thursday BP notified the SCAQMD of its plan to flare at the Carson refinery from Nov. 25 through Dec. 21. Flaring can indicate an interruption in refinery operations, whether planned or unplanned.; a BP representative wasn't immediately available to comment.
The Carson refinery has the capacity to process 265,000 barrels per day.
