Barclays Unveils New M&A Leaders in Europe as Shake-Up Continues -- Financial News

Barclays PLC named new leaders for its European mergers-and-acquisitions team in Europe, the latest shake-up at the U.K. lender's investment bank as it looks to gain market share from its rivals.

The U.K. lender has named Omar Faruqui as co-head of M&A for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, alongside Pier Luigi Colizzi, who was promoted to head of investment banking for continental Europe earlier this month. Mr. Faruqui was previously co-head of M&A for the U.K.

Derek Shakespeare, a veteran dealmaker who has co-headed Barclays' U.K. M&A team alongside Mr. Faruqui, has moved into the role of chairman of U.K. M&A. The bank recently created a team of senior dealmakers in a number of chair positions--where investment bankers focus on relationships with key clients away from day-to-day management responsibilities.

Mr. Shakespeare will retain his role as head of financial institutions M&A for EMEA.

Pat Guerin has been promoted to head of M&A covering technology, media and telecoms clients, having joined the U.K. lender in 2016.

"These appointments reflect our focus on EMEA and, in particular, the M&A opportunity in the region. Our business has grown significantly in recent years, and these senior promotions will put us in a stronger position to further strengthen our business and provide best-in-class M&A advice to our clients," said Reid Marsh, head of investment banking for EMEA and Gary Posternack, global head of M&A in a statement.

Barclays has been on a hiring spree of senior dealmakers in Europe, and has unveiled a flurry of changes to the upper ranks of its investment bank in recent weeks.

Jean Francois Astier and John Miller were named co-heads of investment banking on July 20, and are set to lead a new management team within the unit, comprised of 11 senior bankers, largely based in New York.

It has also hired Ingrid Hengster as country CEO for Germany and global chair of investment banking and Laurent Meyer has joined as vice chairman for investment banking in Europe as part of a broader expansion on the continent.
