International stocks trading in New York were mixed on Monday. The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged up 0.01% to 147.89. The European index increased 0.37% to 145.2, the Asian index edged down 0.21% to 148.28, the Latin American index fell 1.9% to 268 and the emerging markets index eased 0.82% to 290. Among the companies with shares that actively traded were BT Group PLC (BT, BT.A.LN) and Telefonica SA (TEF, TEF.MC).
BT Group PLC said it is in early talks to buy Telefonica's U.K. mobile business, O2, as the two former monopolies move to shuffle their product offerings in a converging U.K. telecommunications market. BT Group shares rose 4.2% to $61.97. Telefonica shares rose 1.3% to $15.64.
Aviva PLC (AV, AV.LN) shares were lower Monday as the insurer's planned 5.6 billion British pounds ($8.8 billion) offer for Friends Life Group, announced Friday, met a cautious response. Shares fell 14 cents to $16.18.
BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP, BHP.AU) will intensify its cost-cutting and productivity drive as executives of the world's largest mining company by market value look to free up cash for shareholder returns and favored expansion projects. Shares fell 2.2% to $56.08.
