China Airlines Ltd. finalized a $2.1 billion deal Wednesday with Boeing Co. (BA) to order six 777 freighters in an effort to modernize its cargo fleet.
China Airlines is launching operations from Taipei to North America, a key market. The orders fit in with its plans to transition its 747 fleet to the larger and longer-range twin-engine 777 freighters. Freighters are aircraft designed to carry goods in bulk.
"Air cargo is an important part of our overall business and the introduction of these new 777 freighters will play an integral role in our long-term growth strategy," said Hsieh Su-Chien, the chairman of China Airlines, in prepared remarks.
The deal follows the carrier's announcement at the Paris Air Show in June to order up to six freight aircraft from Boeing.
