Boeing Co. (BA) said its deliveries of commercial airplanes rose 7% for the third quarter amid continued growth for its 787 Dreamliner and its best-selling 737 single-aisle jetliner.

The aerospace and defense company delivered 199 commercial aircraft in the latest quarter, compared with 186 a year earlier.

Boeing has continued to enjoy strong demand for its fuel-efficient jetliners despite falling oil prices. The company and rival Airbus Group SE have been vying to build market share by building planes faster and more efficiently than the other.

Shipments of the company's 787 Dreamliners rose to 37 from 31 a year earlier, while shipments of its 737 jets grew to 126 from 120.

The company also shipped five of its 767 widebody jets, up from two a year earlier. Boeing last month announced that it plans to raise monthly production of the 767 to 2.5 in late 2017 to accommodate a previously announced 50-plane order from FedEx Corp.

The defense, space and security segment's deliveries were flat at 48.

During July Boeing's new chief executive, Dennis Muilenburg, pledged to continue his predecessor's focus on ramping up aircraft production and increasing shareholder returns.

The company plans to release its third-quarter results Oct. 21.
