International stocks trading in New York closed mixed on Monday. The Bank of New York index of American depositary receipts rose 0.11% to 156.80. The European index increased 0.10% to 156, the Asian index edged up 0.34% to 150.29, the Latin American index fell 0.41% to 289.59 and the emerging markets index increased 0.07% to 290.46. Among the companies with shares that actively traded were Philips NV (PHG, PHIA.AE ) and America Movil SAB (AMOV, AMX.MX).

Philips NV is spinning off its lighting components business in the latest stage of the once-diversified Dutch electronics group's plan to focus on a handful of higher-margin activities. Philips said it would seek outside investors for its Lumileds Lighting unit which it will combine with its automotive-lighting business. The businesses that will be separated primarily manufacture LED components used in products ranging from televisions and smart phones to traffic lights. Shares rose 4.2% to $31.76.

America Movil shares continued to rise Monday on the decision by Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim Friday to buy back the 8.3% stake in the wireless giant that longtime investor AT& Inc. (T) is planning to sell. America Movil shares rose 1.6% to $20.80.

Budget Irish airline Ryanair Holdings PLC (RYAAY, RYA.LN, RYA.DB) said Monday it has appointed Neil Sorahan chief financial officer starting Oct. 1. Mr. Sorahan, currently finance director, will succeed Howard Millar, the airline's deputy chief executive and chief financial officer. Mr. Millar plans to step down in December, after 23 years of service, to pursue other opportunities, the company said. Shares rose 0.49% to $55.80.

GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK, GSK.LN) and Theravance Inc. (THRX) submitted a supplemental new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for an asthma treatment for patients aged 12 years and older. The British pharmaceutical company said the application is for two different doses of Breo Ellipta, a combination of fluticasone furoate and vilanterol, as a once-daily treatment for asthma. Glaxo shares fell 0.56% to $53.48.
