Archer Daniels Midland Co. said its Black Sea grain-trading operations haven't been affected so far by the escalating turmoil in Ukraine, though the commodities company is watching the situation closely.
"Our primary concern is the safety of our employees, all of whom are safe," a spokeswoman for the Decatur, Ill., company said in a news release Monday. "We haven't seen any significant impact to business and continue to monitor the situation."
Ongoing uncertainty over the future of Ukraine, one of the world's biggest producers of corn and wheat, deepened over the weekend after Russia shifted military forces into the Crimean peninsula following months of political unrest in the country, sparking an international outcry.
ADM, one of the world's largest traders and processors of grain and oilseeds, runs an inland grain-elevator system, ports and an oilseed processing plant in Ukraine, where exports continued Monday despite the unrest, analysts said.
