Lilly Launches New Award To Promote Enlightened Oncology Reporting

Luminous Award to recognize and reward outstanding cancer reporting around the world 


ATLANTA, June 2  /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lilly Oncology today launched a new initiative to encourage "enlightened, intelligent and inspiring" journalism on cancer-related issues around the world.  The Luminous Award, announced today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting, will recognize and reward journalism that enlightens audiences by providing responsible, accurate and timely information on advances in cancer prevention and treatment.

The Luminous Award is open to all journalists -- staff or freelance -- writing for national or local newspapers, magazines, newsletters or websites, specialist health/medical publications and business or pharmaceutical trade publications.  There will also be a separate category for broadcast journalists.

"By helping to enlighten people affected by cancer -- either directly or indirectly -- we will be fulfilling one of our major commitments as a company, namely to provide support in its broadest sense to people with cancer and their families."

The prestigious independent judging panel will consist of leading cancer specialists from around the world, representatives of professional oncology organizations and patient advocacy groups.  The panel will nominate award winners based on a range of criteria including news value; raising awareness of advances in oncology; timeliness, clarity and accuracy in describing the science behind the story; and creativity of approach.  The independent judging panel will be the sole decision maker during the judging process and its selection of the winners will be final.

The winner of the Luminous Award will have the opportunity to choose a seven-day trip to Boston, London, New York, Paris or Sydney for two.  In addition the winner will meet with a world-renowned oncologist or cancer researcher, based in the chosen city, who will enlighten him or her about their current research, discuss exciting new advances and answer any questions the winner may have.

In lieu of the trip, the winner can choose for Eli Lilly and Company to donate a euro 10,000 scholarship in the winner's name to a well respected academic institution with a journalism program.  The goal of the scholarship is to inspire a student to learn the skills of clear, accurate and intelligent reporting.

There will also be a runner-up prize of five days of enlightenment for two to either London or New York where he or she will have the opportunity to meet with a world-renowned oncologist or cancer researcher who will share their insights.  In lieu of the five-day trip, the runner-up can choose for Eli Lilly and Company to donate a euro 5,000 scholarship in his or her name, to a well respected academic institution with a journalism program.

Articles for submission should be between 1,000 and 3,000 words in length and, if not written in English, accompanied by a one to two paragraph summary in English.  All articles must be the original work of the entrant, and have been published between 1 September 2001 and 30 August 2006.

Deadline for entries is 1 September 2006.
