In the progression of IP as the transport of choice for next-generation
communications networks, IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is emerging as an
important standard for the delivery of converged services. IMS is an open,
standardized, operator friendly, next-gen multimedia architecture for mobile
and fixed IP services. IMS is a VoIP implementation based on a 3GPP variant of
SIP, and runs over the standard Internet protocol (IP). It is used by telecom
operators on next-gen networks (which combine voice, data and video), to offer
network controlled multimedia services.
IMS & Wireline to Wireless Convergence - Panel Session Abstract
Continued development of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) in mobile networks has
created the framework necessary to converge fixed and mobile services using
real time protocols. The presenter will discuss how the development and
implementation of cornerstone technologies such as SIP, IPTV, and IMS are
pushing the intelligence of the network beyond the core into its connected
devices, blurring the distinction between premise, access network, and the
edge. In addition, Mr. Moran will explore how the inclusion of new access
methods into the network will not only introduce competition into the space,
but will also create an additional battleground between Wireless and Wireline
providers as operators seek to reclaim users lost to past mobile substitution.
