(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20001201/DEF008LOGO ) Ryntz's presentation, "Bring Back the Steel: The Growth of Plastics in Automotive Applications," led the Western Coatings Societies Technical Symposium. The paper discussed the growth of plastics -- whether decorated or mold-in-color -- in automotive applications, and assessed their durability when utilized in interior and exterior vehicle applications. The Mattiello lecture commemorates the contributions of Dr. Mattiello, former president of the FSCT (1943-44), who was instrumental in expanding the application of the sciences in the decorative and protective coatings fields. Each year, the lecture covers a topic of current interest based on a phase of chemistry or other science fundamental to coatings. Ryntz was chosen to deliver the 2005 Mattiello Lecture from a group of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the science and/or technology of coatings. "We are pleased that the FSCT chose Ryntz to receive this distinguished honor," said John Kill, senior vice president and president of Visteon's North America customer group. "Ryntz is recognized as one of the world's leading experts in the area of automotive plastics and her contributions have led to numerous innovations, including the development of new techniques to study paint on plastics performance." The author of more than 75 papers and an inventor on 25 patents in the paint and plastics field, Ryntz also has written one book, Adhesion to Plastics: Molding and Paintability and edited three books, Plastics and coatings: Durability, Stabilization and Testing, Service Life Prediction: Challenging the Status Quo, and Coatings of Polymers and Plastics. She is the author of the monograph, "Painting of Plastics," in the FSCT Series on Coatings Technology and is a prolific lecturer. Ryntz has received a number of awards including the 2000 George B. Heckel Award - the FSCT's highest honor; first place in the 2000 FSCT Roon Foundation Award Competition; the 2003 Roy W. Tess Award from the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) of the American Chemical Society; and the 2004 Women's Automotive Association International Professional Achievement Award. She is also the recipient of the Henry Ford Technology Award and several customer-driven quality awards from Ford Motor Company, as well as the Gold Award and Outstanding Leadership Award from the Engineering Society of Detroit for contributions to advancing the knowledge of science and engineering. Ryntz is listed in Straithmore's Who's Who in the World.
