Massachusetts Water Pollution Control Association award names it the best-run small wastewater treatment plant in the region

United Water announced today that the Massachusetts Water Pollution Control Association (MWPCA) has recognized the Town of Cohasset, MA, wastewater treatment plant—operated and maintained by United Water—as the best small wastewater treatment facility in the state. United Water has been operating the plant since January 2011.

“United Water takes its job as an environmental trustee very seriously and we are committed to helping communities protect our shared natural resources,” said Nadine Leslie, president of United Water’s Environmental Services segment. “We are very proud of the dedication of our Cohasset staff, especially that of Mark Cataldo, the project manager, and Tim Swimm, the plant operator.”

“Cohasset is located in a very environmentally sensitive area. It’s crucial to have our wastewater treatment plant operated and maintained in such a way that protects the environment,” said Diane Hindley of the Cohasset Sewer Commission. “United Water does that well.”

MWPCA President Ray Willis said after the awards ceremony, “Often times, many citizens in our communities overlook or just are unaware of the work that goes on behind the scenes, and underground, to provide clean and safe water to them. Wastewater treatment is the ‘forgotten infrastructure’ in many ways – while everyone notices roads and bridges, our water reclamation facilities quietly do their job, for the most part unnoticed. It is an honor to be able to present such prestigious awards to the Town of Cohasset facility and its operators today; their achievements are truly outstanding, given the tremendous competition from other facilities in the state. The performance exhibited by this facility’s group of operators is a great example of the high level of commitment and professionalism that is a goal of all water quality professionals in this state.”

Tom Azevedo, a member of MWPCA’s board of directors and an assistant plant manager at United Water’s project in East Providence, RI presented the award. MWPCA is a non-profit organization established in 1965, to provide education, training, and promote the exchange of information among operators and water quality professionals.
