Rockstar's 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' Shoots Its Way to #1
in Video Game Rentals
Grand Theft Auto's $1.6 Million Debut Helps Video Game Category Blow Past Home
Video Rentals
PORTLAND, Ore, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- "Grand Theft Auto: San
Andreas" out-rented all other video game titles in its first week of release
earning an unprecedented $1.6 million in consumer rental revenue for the week
ending October 31, 2004, according to game intelligence from Rentrak's Home
Video Essentials(TM).
Remarkably, the newest installment of Rockstar Games' blockbuster franchise,
which was developed exclusively for the Playstation2 platform and delivers
extreme action and first person shooter excitement to gamers, outperformed the
weekly earnings of the top 10 renting VHS titles.
"The earning power of the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise is a true phenomenon.
Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on the PlayStation2 and
Xbox platforms have grossed more than $45 million in rental revenue to-date,"
said Brad Hackley, vice president of business development for Home Video
Essentials at Rentrak. "This is undeniable proof that video games have emerged
as a dominant force within the entertainment industry."
