Micron Technology Inc., which last month pledged to invest $40 billion in the U.S. through the end of the decade and create up to 40,000 jobs, on Thursday unveiled plans to spend $15 billion on a new fabrication plant for memory manufacturing in its hometown of Boise, Idaho.
Spurred by the passage of the $280 billion Chips and Science Act of 2022, Micron said the first new memory plant in the U.S. in 20 years will create roughly 17,000 new jobs, including about 2,000 direct Micron jobs.
Micron said it plans to co-locate the plant with its research-and-development center at its Boise headquarters, a move it said will enhance operational efficiency, accelerate technology deployment and improve time to market.
The company's plans include anticipated federal grants and credits made possible through the CHIPS and Science Act, as well as incentives from the state of Idaho.
