MARKET OVERVIEW
Overseas markets are looking quite hesitant in early trade this morning, as just
one of the 15 markets that we track is currently positive. The cumulative
average return on the group stands at a minus 0.755 percent. The service sector
in Germany expanded for a third consecutive month in October. The October
Purchasing Managers Services Index came in at 53.7 improving from September's
52.4 and exceeding expectations for 53.0. The services sector accounts for
approximately 62 percent of Germany's Gross Domestic Product.
At 10:00 a.m. today, Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan testifies before U.S.
Senate Banking Committee on the status of the banking industry in Washington.
Sharing the same time slot is the release of the October ISM Non- Manufacturing
Index, which is expected to rise to 65.5 from the 63.3 booked in September.
This index has been below 50 (the demarcation point between expansion and
contraction) only once this year, that being the 47.9 posted in March. Going
one-step further, the composite index was last below 60 in May with a reading of
54.5. Also at 10:00 a.m., September Factory Orders are expected to rise by 0.4
percent, reversing August's surprise 0.8 percent decline. As an additional
incentive to stay tuned, Cisco Systems will report its first quarter earnings
after the market close today. Currently the Street is looking for 15-cents per
shares on revenue of $4.8 billion. Aside from the top and bottom line numbers,
rhetoric has it that the "comments" by Chambers are just as important. This
report is the talk of the town for tech and will be a motivational speech for
traders in tomorrow's session. Now while we still have a full day of trade
before the release, Cisco put options traded 5.8 times their average volume
yesterday with 78,480 contracts trading on the November 20 put alone.
