Liberty Global PLC doesn't want to become Germany's fourth mobile network operator if Telefonica SA buys Royal KPN NV's operations in the country, said the chief of Liberty's German unit Tuesday.
Telefonica's German subsidiary wants to buy KPN's business in the country for 8.55 billion euros ($11.72 billion) which would reduce the number of national cellular carriers to three from four. This has raised concerns among regulators that reduced competition could lead to price increases.
Telefonica Deutschland AG may sell spectrum licenses so another company can enter the market. The chief executive of Liberty's German subsidiary, Unitymedia, one of the largest cable network operators in the country, however, said he's not interested in building a cellular network.
It "wouldn't pay off," Unitymedia CEO Lutz Schueler said.
