The National Football League reached agreement with CBS and NBC to share its Thursday night prime-time package of games along with the league-owned cable channel NFL Network, people familiar with the matter said.
Under the terms of the deal, which will cost the networks about $225 million each, CBS and NBC would each carry five Thursday night games that also will be simulcast on the NFL Network, the people said. The NFL Network also will carry several games exclusively.
The new agreement, which could be announced as early as Monday, is a marked departure from the previous two Thursday Night Football contracts, which were with CBS alone.
For the NFL, by splitting the package between CBS and NBC, it will increase the rights fees it receives from the $300 million CBS paid this season.
The NFL is also planning an online package for the Thursday games that will create an additional revenue stream.
The league and CBS and NBC are still hammering out various scheduling details for the next deal, the people familiar with the matter said.
