Comcast customers in Monroe County, Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast who evacuate during Hurricane Irma will be able to remotely access live stream broadcasts from WTVJ-TV/ NBC-6 in Miami and WPTV-TV/ Newschannel 5 in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. Through agreements with both stations, Comcast is now carrying the broadcasts through its Xfinity Stream app.
NBC-6 and NBC Newschannel 5 normally carry live streams online, but viewing is typically restricted to their respective local markets. By making the broadcasts available on the Xfinity Stream app, Comcast and the stations are giving local customers and viewers a way to get important news and information about the storm and their communities in real-time, even if they had to evacuate. It marks the first time a cable company has devised a way to team up with local broadcasters and offer relocated customers out-of-market access to local broadcasts.
Comcast developed the plan as it was looking for a way to leverage its WiFi network, which is the largest in the nation, and its cloud-based network infrastructure to help impacted customers. This unique combination of assets makes it possible for Comcast to provide seamless viewing options in and out of market, either through its facilities-based network or wirelessly.
“This is an unprecedented and unique way we can use our technology to help customers stay connected to breaking news, weather reports and their favorite local programming during a time of crisis,” said Amy Smith, regional senior vice president for Comcast’s Florida Region. “We’re extremely grateful to our partners at WTVJ-TV/NBC6 in Miami and WPTV-TV/NBC Newschannel 5 in the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast for helping us be responsive to the community during such a difficult period.”
Comcast customers can download the Xfinity Stream app to laptops or PCs by visiting xfinityTV.com, or to mobile devices through the iOS or Android app stores.
Earlier this week, Comcast opened up free Xfinity WiFi service across Florida. More than 137,000 Xfinity WiFi hotspots have been activated throughout the state to anyone who needs them, including non-Xfinity customers. More information and a map of hotspot locations can be found at Xfinity.com/wifi.
