The S&P/Case-Shiller 20 city home price index for July is expected at 9:00 am ET Tuesday. Economists are looking for 0.1 percent growth, after three straight months of declines.

Ahead of the data, the greenback showed mixed trading against its major rivals. While the greenback rose against the euro and the franc, it retreated from early highs against the yen and the pound.

The greenback was worth 1.1204 against the euro, 100.29 against the yen, 1.2970 against the pound and 0.9704 against the franc as of 8:55 am ET.
