Proxim Announces ORiNOCO Smart Wireless Controller to Enable VLAN
Roaming
Ensures Mobility and High Availability for Voice and Data Applications
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Proxim Corporation, a
leading provider of wireless networking equipment, today announced immediate
availability of the ORiNOCO Smart Wireless Controller. The new Smart Wireless
Controller offers an ideal solution when Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN)
mobility is required in networks using ORiNOCO AP-4000 wireless access points.
When used with the ORiNOCO AP-4000, Proxim's Smart Wireless Controller ensures
mobility for voice and data applications.
The introduction of Proxim's ORiNOCO Smart Wireless Controller makes it
possible for large campuses or municipal networks to ensure roaming throughout
an entire coverage area. The Smart Wireless Controller's client information
database allows clients to roam from one VLAN to another without risk of
network connections being dropped or networked applications disrupted.
"The key features of Proxim's Smart Wireless Controller -- VLAN roaming through
distributed tunneling and Ethernet redundancy -- are especially of benefit in
the types of municipal/public safety installations we deploy," said Tyler van
Houwelingen of Azulstar, a company that recently launched the world's first
metro-wide voice over Wi-Fi phone service in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. "These
cities must provide Wi-Fi seamless roaming across their networks, and Proxim's
product provides that along with high network availability, another critical
feature."
"In addition to municipal networks, the capabilities of the Smart Wireless
Controller are especially important to enterprises that need to converge voice
and data on a single network, hospitals and clinics using voice over Wi-Fi, and
universities deploying wireless LANs across the campus," said Jeff Orr, senior
manager, worldwide product marketing for Proxim.
"For these applications, complex VLAN assignment is out of the question. The
Smart Wireless Controller provides the perfect alternative, creating a
distributed WLAN infrastructure that promotes seamless mobility."
The ORiNOCO Smart Wireless Controller provides fast roaming and data
prioritization by eliminating traffic duplication and networking bottlenecks
via distributed tunneling. The result is a fast, smooth handoff of clients
between intelligent access points for latency-sensitive applications such as
voice over Wi-Fi.
Inclusion of a redundant dual 10/100 Ethernet ports within the Smart Wireless
Controller delivers protection from outages due to network failure. Redundancy
is also built-in between Smart Wireless Controllers in the event of service
interruption, ensuring no single point of failure.
Price & Availability
The ORiNOCO Smart Wireless Controller is available now starting at $2,999.
Beginning now and through July 30, 2005, Proxim is offering its global
distributor channel a "Choose Redundancy: Get 50% off the Second ORiNOCO Smart
Wireless Controller" promotion. Purchasing two units allows resellers to
receive a 50% discount off the second Smart Wireless Controller purchased
through Authorized Proxim Distributors in select regions.
