LE BOURGET, France--Virgin Atlantic Airways Chief Executive Shai Weiss said Monday that the British carrier would introduce 14 Airbus SE (AIR.FR) A330-900s, with options for six more.
The deal is part of a wider Virgin Atlantic fleet renewal. The new A330s would replace older versions of the plane now in service with the carrier.
The planes are due for delivery from 2021.
Virgin Atlantic will buy eight of the planes from the European plane maker and lease six more from Air Lease Corp. (AL).
The planes are powered by Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (RR.LN) Trent 7000 engines that are akin to the Trent 1000 Virgin uses on Boeing Co. (BA) 787 Dreamliners. Engine issues with the Trent 1000 have idled some of the planes at Virgin and other carriers.
Chris Cholerton, head of civil aerospace for Rolls, said there would be no disruption with the Trent 7000, in part based on lessons learned from the Trent 1000.
