Italy's state-controlled Eni SpA (E, ENI.MI) said late Wednesday its chief financial officer, Alessandro Bernini, has resigned from his post following news that Eni's energy engineering services provider, Saipem (SPM.MI), was the subject of a corruption investigation.
Bernini, who was said to have resigned in the company's interests, had been CFO at Saipem until 2008.
The company said in a press release that Massimo Mondazzi, currently executive vice president for Central Asia, Far East and Pacific Region of Eni Exploration and Production Division, will replace Bernini as Eni's CFO.
Milan prosecutors are investigating Saipem's operations in Algeria.
Earlier Wednesday, Saipem Chief Executive Pietro Franco Tali offered to resign, even though he isn't linked to the judicial probe, while Saipem suspended Pietro Varone, the company's chief operating officer of its engineering and construction business unit, as he emerged as a possible suspect in the corruption probe.
