NEW YORK, Dec. 5  /PRNewswire/ -- As holiday decorations go up, so do your energy bills.  According to the Alliance to Save Energy, your energy costs can go up as much as $120 each month during the holiday season.  But, there are ways to light up for less this season.

Experts say one bright idea is to switch to LED holiday lights.  LED stands for light emitting diodes.  They're lights that, when clustered together, appear brighter than incandescent bulbs -- plus they don't get as warm when lit so it reduces the possibility of a fire hazard.  Most importantly, they use 75 percent less energy than traditional lights.

If half of all traditional bulbs in the U.S. were replaced with LED lights, it could yield a savings of $17 billion a year in energy bills.  It's a money saving move that even major retailers are making.  You can also look for LED lawn stakes.  They're weather resistant and can brighten your home by using just 10 watts of energy per set.  Also, keep your lights on a timer to reduce energy bills.  These are just some of the tips to light up the holidays without dimming the cheer.
