MELBOURNE, Australia--A worker trapped underground in an Indonesia gold mine for eight days has been rescued, Newcrest Mining Ltd. (NCM.AU) said Tuesday.
The Australian company said Pak Mursalim Sahman was being transported to the surface and would be taken to a local medical center for health checks and to be reunited with his family.
All mining and processing operations at the Gosowong mine remain suspended, it said.
The worker was trapped about 300 meters underground after an unspecified "geotechnical event" on Feb. 8 disrupted a number of levels of the Kencana underground mine at Newcrest's Gosowong operation, located on Indonesia's Halmahera Island. Contact was made with the worker on Feb. 10, after a small-diameter hole was drilled through 54 meters of ground to where he was located, allowing the company to speak with him.
The mine is operated by Pt Nusa Halmahera Minerals, which is 75% owned by Newcrest. The rest is owned by Indonesia-based Pt Aneka Tambang.
