MONTREAL, May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LMS Medical Systems (TSX:LMZ), a healthcare technology company and developer of the CALM(R) patient safety software systems for obstetrics, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Regional Women's Health Management, LLC (Regional) of New Jersey to license CALM Shoulder Screen. Regional is one of the largest groups of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in New Jersey, serving over 200,000 women annually and delivering over 5000 babies. CALM Shoulder Screen will assist obstetricians with managing the risks associated with shoulder dystocia (ShD). ShD occurs when a baby's shoulder gets stuck behind the mother's pubic bone during childbirth. It is one of the most feared conditions that can occur during labor and delivery. Potential injuries include injury to the nerves of the baby's arm and shoulder, brain damage and sometimes death. "Acquiring CALM Shoulder Screen for the benefit of our patients was an obvious choice" commented Frank Caso, President and CEO of Regional, whose group selected and licensed the program from LMS. "We are also very pleased that our carrier has recognized the value of this risk management initiative." "Shoulder dystocia is one of the scariest crises to occur in obstetrics. Applying ShD maneuvers together with guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) are simply not enough" commented Dr. Kay, FACOG and Chairman of Regional. "We believe the CALM Shoulder Screen will not only help us to identify the higher risk mothers and take action to avoid a significant number of persistent injuries, but also help us to properly identify those lower risk mothers who have a chance of delivering without unnecessary intervention." "Injury related to shoulder dystocia has long been thought to be unpredictable and unpreventable to the OBGYN community," commented Diane Cote, CEO of LMS. "The initiative taken by groups such as Regional is a true indicator that this is becoming an echo of the past." About Regional Women's Health Group: Regional Women's Health Management, LLC (Regional) is a physician-owned New Jersey based Limited Liability Company.
