In the news release, Importance of Residential Fire Sprinklers Reinforced in Pennsylvania, issued 29-Sep-2009 by Tyco Fire Suppression & Building Products over PR Newswire, we are advised by the company that the "ABOUT TYCO INTERNATIONAL" paragraph was incorrect as originally issued. The complete, corrected release follows: ERIE, Pa., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- This summer, the Ward family of Erie, Pa., received a new home equipped with a Rapid Response® Home Fire Sprinkler System thanks to Tyco Fire Suppression & Building Products (TFSBP) and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The installation of residential sprinkler systems has become a well-recognized safety measure that saves both lives and property. In fact, last September, members of the International Code Council (ICC) voted overwhelmingly to include fire sprinklers systems as a standard safety feature in new single- and two-family homes by adding a requirement to the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC). The IRC is the model code used by most states and jurisdictions in the United States. Pennsylvania, which uses the IRC for the basis of its residential building code, is moving towards the adoption of the code by year end. The new code has already been approved by the state's building and safety experts when the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code (UCC) Review and Advisory Committee voted in April. "The citizens of Pennsylvania should have the opportunity to build and live in fire safe communities," said Representative Tim Solobay (D-District 48), who is also a fire chief in his hometown of Canonsburg and Chairman of House of Representatives Firefighter Caucus. "By following Extreme Makeover's lead and installing sprinkler systems in all new homes, Pennsylvania can help safeguard the lives and property of its residents." "Sprinklers are an affordable, dependable and unique way to protect homes from fire. They save lives, prevent horrendous injuries and make it safer for our firefighters to do their job. I commend and thank Extreme Makeover: Home Edition for helping the Ward family and for protecting their new house with sprinklers," added Representative Patrick Harkins (D-District 1). TFSBP donated a Rapid Response® Home Fire Sprinkler System. The Rapid Response system is always on call, working to suppress fires rapidly and effectively. The system responds during a threatening fire when surrounding air temperature rises and the sprinkler closest to the fire activates. The sprinkler then sprays water over the flames, either extinguishing them completely or suppressing heat and toxic smoke until the fire department arrives. The sprinklers are linked by a network of Tyco BlazeMaster® CPVC pipe and fittings. Because of its reliability, performance and ease of installation, CPVC has become the industry preferred piping system for residential fire sprinkler systems. BlazeMaster CPVC pipe and fittings are specifically designed for fire sprinkler systems and have more than 20 years of proven, reliable performance in the field. "Residential sprinklers are the ultimate line of defense in protecting lives and property from fire," said Darren Palmieri, product manager at TFSBP. "The Extreme Makeover team's commitment to safety and innovative products in each and every home they build makes the addition of a sprinkler system a natural fit." The entire Erie community banded together, donating their time and resources to build a safe, new home for the Ward family - which includes Clara Ward, a 70-year-old woman inflicted with a degenerative muscular disease, and her family, who uses the home to run a Youth Development Center for abused and neglected children. Automatic fire sprinkler system designer Jerry Cussins of Erie-based WMT Spaeder contacted TFSBP regarding donation of the system and with the help of his team, proudly installed it. "I began this build having a contractor's perspective only," said Cussins. "However, when more than 500 supporters joined together for a kick-off pep rally, I realized that this was about more than just building a house for an incredible family. This was about uniting and protecting a community. The home's sprinkler system offers safety and peace of mind to all of the youth that utilize the Ward's center. I hope that these systems will become a standard feature in new homes throughout the state of Pennsylvania." The Erie Extreme Makeover build was completed on July 2, and the show will air in the Fall of 2009 on ABC.
